Rackspace has picked up the Drizzle team that Oracle cast off when it acquired Sun. In case you don’t know, Drizzle is a cloud-directed, Linux-leaning, stripped-down, hitherto for unsupported, GPL 2 MySQL 6.0 fork that Rackspace is betting will infinitely scale, or at least scale better than MySQL. It looks like Rackspace means to go to production with the thing this year. Hopefully it will be stable. Drizzle runs the risk of not being as stable as MySQL, because the Drizzle team is taking things out and putting other stuff in. Of course it may be successful in trying to create a product that’s more stable than MySQL. But creating a stable DBMS engine is something that has always taken years and years.

As BIRT 2.5.2 was released recently, I wanted to post on some of the new features available in the release. BIRT 2.5.2 represents a maintenance release, which is generally dominated with bug fixes and not new enhancements, but this release does have a few that are worth noting. The SQL Query Builder is now directly available without creating a connection profile. When adding a new data source, the query builder is listed as one of the data sources available. After selecting the Query Builder data source you are prompted with a list of available databases. Once you select the type of database you can then specify the specific driver and connection properties that will be used.

LED Elevator and Industrial Lamps Designed to Last 50 Times Longer Than Incandescent Bulbs

NxGen Technologies has developed an LED elevator lamp, the LED 1383, that casts a warm, white light and is designed to last 50,000 hours instead of the normal 300 hour lifespan of traditional 1383 incandescent bulbs. The LED 1383 is commonly used to light elevator cabs, lighting displays, reading spotlights in RVs and industrial equipment driven by 12-volt AC or DC power. Using a high brightness LED emitter, the power consumption is dramatically reduced compared to the lamp's incandescent counterparts that consume 20 watts of power. Because the lamps use LED technology instead of traditional incandescent filaments, they provide more than 85 percent energy savings over incandescent bulbs and generate lower operating temperatures. Furthermore, the lamps contain no glass and are shock and vibration proof. This eliminates the need for Safety Coating the standard 1383 Lamps.
